caused by diabetes.
Tips for
Diabetic Foot Care
The first step to healthy feet is making
sure your diabetes is under control. You
and your health care team should come up
with a plan to keep your glucose, blood
pressure, and cholesterol in normal
ranges. Usually you can do this with
diet, exercise, medication, and regular
doctor visits, but you also have to come
up a good foot care plan you can follow
at home. And, you actually have to do
it, not just say you do it--kinda like
flossing.
Your foot care
plan should include checking out your
feet for sores and other problems every
day. You should also wash your feet
every day and dry them thoroughly,
especially the oft-forgotten area
between your toes. Moisturizing the feet
is also very important if you don't want
the skin to become dry and cracked. (And
trust us, you don't.)
Should you
develop corns or calluses, you
definitely want to have them looked by a
health professional. You may just be
told to gently file them away, no sweat.
Finally, trimming your toenails is also
very important. Do this after you wash
and dry your feet at least once week,
maybe more.
Remember that
main problem with diabetic feet is the
loss of sensation. So, if your foot gets
hurt, you may not even know it. While in
the short run your foot is pain free--a
good thing, in the long run your foot
might get infected--a very bad thing.
That's why you have to do your best to
keep your feet out of harm's way and
wear the right footgear. Whether you're
outdoors or indoors, you should always
sport shoes and socks that fit right. At
Big Feet Store we can help you find
both. After all, if you practice good
foot care from the beginning, you can
prevent or delay most serious foot
problems. For more useful info, check

Foot Care" section on this website.
And, as always, be sure to consult your
physician for all matters related to
your disease.
